While the two terms go hand in hand, the differences are huge. While most people consider dropship as wholesale dropship, it’s not in some cases. When starting a business it’s important to know which is which and wisely decide which path you’ll need to pursue when starting your business.
Wholesale, dropship, and wholesale dropship are usually thrown together loosely on most websites, yes even this one, because they are closely related but not alike. Below are some points that are different about wholesale and dropship.
Wholesale products are usually cheaper; they are usually sold in bulk allowing the customer to get better pricing on shipping and getting better prices on products because of the bulk ordering. While dropshipping prices may be low, they are usually associated with one item purchases which in turn will cost more to ship and higher prices because of the single item purchase.
A dropshipper can offer products at wholesale prices but may also charge a fee for using dropship service; this usually is in addition to any other shipping fees and such. A wholesaler will usually only charge shipping for the item.
Wholesale suppliers usually require a tax id, while some dropshippers will not.
Wholesale products can be purchased and then stored at your location. While dropshipping does not send the item to you, rather they send it to your customer. You will never physically touch the item in dropshipping.
Wholesale products can be sold in pallets or truckloads, while dropship products are usually sold one at a time.
The route you decide to take is totally up to you when choosing a wholesale or dropship supplier, but wholesale supplier businesses usually require more startup cost. This is what makes dropshipping so appealing to many new business owners with its very low startup costs.
